CHANCES are, next time you travel, maiden aunts will ply you with money belts and Saint Christopher medals and terrify you with tales of neighbours' kids who fell victim to Khali Cults in India, swallowed laced drinks in Thailand or are still trapped in harems in Saudi Arabia. The victims are always young, with so much to live for, and they all ended up in their graves or their prisons or their harems through ignorance. So the moral is don't: don't talk to strangers; don't drink the water, and above all (this last warning is whispered through tears at the airport) don't sit on foreign toilet seats.

But I am young, and ignorant, and I want to sit on
toilet seats the whole world over. I want to visit bars and saunas and sex shops and beaches, Maiden aunts will not always be around to protect me. But the Spartacus International Gay Guide will. It is like travelling with a wise and worldly friend. In fact it puts the Gay world in your pocket.
The Spartacus Guide tells it all. No matter where you go, from Andorra to Zimbabwe, the Guide outlines the laws, the bars, the saunas and the beats. It even tells you how safe some cruising spots are. For those of you who do sit on toilet seats, and catch something awful, the Guide tells you where to go for treatment. It is sensible, practical, interesting and useful. The Australian scene is covered in fascinating depth. (Did you think that the Tharen is the best gay restaurant in the country? That Rushcutters Bay Park is one of the most dangerous beats in the Southern Hemisphere?)
Almost every gay facility on the planet has an exhaustive code rating so that you know what to expect, when and where to find it, and sometimes how good (or poor) it is. The possibilities boggle the mind. Want military action in Nagoya? Want to cruise in Tiznit or get the clap cured in La Spezia? It's all explained in the Guide. If you are seeing Australia first, you will find the Guide indispensable for those interstate jaunts. Is it safe to cruise in Fitzroy? Where does an older guy go in Adelaide? Buy the Guide and find out. Perhaps my only criticism of the Guide is that the U.S. scene is not dealt with in enough detail, especially regarding beats and bars. But then, Bob Damron is supposed to cover all that. But otherwise the Spartacus International Gay Guide is terrific. It will help you have a good time and save you from some of those awful experiences that maiden aunts are always telling you about.
The Spartacus International Gay Guide is written in four languages. It refers to hundreds of countries in its 800 pages. It costs $17.00 (plus postage) and it is worth every cent. If you're planning the kind of holiday you can't write about on postcards, you should not leave town without your Spartacus International Gay Guide. It's as essential as your passport.
